Baby Blues

Chen Liping stars as a woman haunted by an abortion and subsequent childbearing problems, while Taiwanese star Hou Xiangting is her unmarried sister with a child out of wedlock! Also stars Xie Shaoguang, Zhu Mimi, Jin Yinji, Chen Hanwei, Michelle Chong, Le Yao, Allan Wu.

Morning has just broken. Chen Qiaohua (Chen Liping), nicknamed Jidan Hua, is already busy helping out in her father’s egg shop. The kind-hearted Qiaohua harbours a dark secret. More than a decade ago, the unwed Qiaohua was forced to undergo an abortion. Guilty-stricken, she secretly erects a memorial tablet for her unborn child at a temple. Since then, the 37-year-old Qiaohua has stayed away from affairs of the heart. It is not until she meets the fun-loving confectionery chef, Lan Haishen (Xie Shaoguang), that Qiaohua changes her mind.

Haishen has an ex-wife Xiao Yao (Le Yao), from China. However, when Xiao Yao leaves him for another man, Haishen is sentenced to six months in jail for assault. Unmindful of their chequered past, both Haishen and Qiaohua get married after much difficulty. Soon after their marriage, Qiaohua is under pressure from her mother-in-law Liu Fengping (Zhu Mimi) to produce a child. As she has undergone abortion before, Qiaohua finds it difficult to get pregnant.
At this time, Xiao Yao returns, and pleads with Haishen to take her back. Unfortunately for Qiaohua, Fengping learns of her previous abortion and the latter now turns to Xiao Yao, in the hope of convincing her to produce a grandchild for the Lan family. The muddle-headed Xiao Yao unwittingly becomes a pawn in Fengping’s well-laid plan to create a misunderstanding between her son and daughter-in-law. Just when Qiaohua decides to leave Haishen, she discovers that she is pregnant with his child.

As an expectant mother in her late 30s, Qiaohua faces a lot of difficulties during her pregnancy. Although her mother persuades her to terminate her pregnancy, Qiaohua chooses not to give up as she has not forgiven herself for her previous abortion. As such, she vows to keep the baby at all cost. Just before she is about to give birth, Qiaohua has a near brush with death…

Haishen’s sister Shanhu (Michelle Chong) and her husband, Jiang Weijie (Chen Hanwei) are career-orientated as they hope to retire before they reach 50. Shanhu is an ex-air stewardess. She lost her chance of promotion 7 years ago when she became pregnant with her daughter. She is now working in a budget airline, and is highly valued by her employer as a result of her capability. She has high expectations of both herself and her subordinates. She does not want her subordinates to be absent from work either as a result of pregnancy, or child’s medical leave. Her colleagues think that she is unable to empathise with the difficulties of having to juggle a family and work, not knowing that she has a 7-year daughter.

Weijie holds a senior position in a milk powder company. In order to concentrate on his and Shanhu’s careers, he put his daughter under the care of his mother-in-law. However, he soon realizes that his daughter requires more than material needs. Since Shanhu is at the peak of her career, Weijie decides to give up his job to play a supportive role to his wife’s career, and to see to the needs of his daughter. Shanhu is tasked with an important assignment. However, she discovers herself pregnant again. She does not want to lose her chance to move up the corporate ladder again as a result of her pregnancy. Shanhu and Weijie cannot agree on whether they want to keep the baby. They become estranged. It is not until their daughter encounters a near mishap that Shanhu begins to realize the importance of her child to her. However, being strong-willed and obstinate, Shanhu refuses to give in to her husband and even lies to Weijie that she has already aborted the baby.

At her darkest moment, Shanhu finds a good friend in her colleague, Guo Wenxuan (Allan Wu), leading to a further drift in the relationship between her and her husband. Weijie chooses at this time to start his own diaper distributor business. The initial misunderstanding between Weijie and Qiaohua’s sister Qiaoyun soon develops into something more… Qiaoyun (Hou Xiangting) is a tour guide. She is warm and daring. She befriends a Japanese photographer Harata Toshio and drawn to his carefree mannerism, they consummate their love. Just when Qiaoyun decides to set up her own business, she discovers that she is pregnant with Harata’s child. As she has lost contact with Harata, a bewildered Qiaoyun decides to go for abortion. Yet, after watching a documentary on abortion, she cannot bear to continue with her plan…

Encouraged by her sister Qiaohua, Qiaoyun decides to continue with her pregnancy. Unready for motherhood and unable to handle a constantly wailing baby born prematurely, Qiaoyun develops post-natal blues. In the end, Qiaoyun rises to the task and eases smoothly into the role of motherhood. Qiaoyun is criticized on one occasion when she breastfeeds her baby in public. In an attempt to uphold the rights of a mother, she gathers a group of like-minded mothers to breastfeed together. Just then, Harata Toshio returns. When he learns of his baby’s existence, he decides to assume full responsibility of fatherhood.
